Code of Conduct

 Student Code Of Conduct

Devised 1995

The underlying principle of Nungurner’s Student Code Of Conduct is to show responsibility, self discipline and respect for people. The school community has a joint responsibility to provide a safe and stimulating environment in which children may explore and achieve their, potential. To do this it is important that each of us respects the differences in others and recognises that with our rights come responsibilities.

 Students at Nungurner School have the following rights:

·       to work and play without unfair interference;

·       to ask questions when they don’t understand something and to have extra help if needed;

·       to be and feel safe at all times;

·       to be respected;

·       to a safe clean environment;

·       to be part of the school;

·       to tell their story honestly;

·       to be recognised for positive behaviour.

 Students have the following responsibilities:

·       to be honest;

·       to take responsibility for your own actions;

·       to respect and obey the school rules;

·       to respect other people and their differences and talents;

·       to look after your own, others and the school equipment;

·       to be co-operative and allow the teachers to teach;

·       to help others who need help;

·       to use acceptable behaviour and language at all times;

·       to respect teachers and others in authority.

 These behaviors are unacceptable:

·       spitting, swearing, teasing;

·       fighting (including playfights);

·       going out of the school boundaries or leaving the school grounds without permission;

·       throwing stones, sticks or any other objects that may cause injury;

·       interfering with other peoples’ games;

·       climbing trees, tankstands or buildings;

·       using “fighting” toys;

·       using bikes, skateboards, rollerblades/skates in the school yard;

·       answering back, lying, being cheeky;

·       swapping personal items;

·       playing rough and/ or dangerous games;

·       littering;

·       excluding other people.

 Consequences Of Breaches:

 We aim to have the ‘punishment fit the crime’ and to be consistent when dealing with misbehaviour. If the Code of Conduct isn’t followed the following steps may be taken:

·       warning and discussion;

·       removal from activity or loss of use of equipment;

·       time out;

·       completing a given task;

·       finishing class work in own  time;

·       parental contact;

·       discipline contract.

 In cases of extreme disruption parents or emergency contacts can be called to come and remove the student until she / he is calm enough to join in school activities.

 In cases of extreme behaviour suspension or expulsion maybe necessary in which case DSE guidelines will be followed.

 In implementing our School Code of Conduct Nungurner has adopted an approach where personal responsibility and self discipline are rewarded. To ensure the development  of  a positive and caring environment, the development of student self esteem and self concept and a pride in the school community an emphasis will be placed on the positive aspects of behaviour.

Methods used could include:

- co-operative learning sessions

- class presentations

- communication books

- organised games at recess

- yard duty raffle

- ‘show off’ notice board

- school concerts

- Individual awards

- ‘positives’ assembly

- specialist programs eg.     - tennis lessons

                                                - basketball coaching

                                                - pottery

- kids’ council

The Code of Conduct will be reviewed regularly by all decision making groups within the school.
