Reading Program

Our reading program is one that relies on strong communication between school and home. As part of the program your child will have a book which he or she will bring home each night. Each night your child reads aloud to you and you mark the pages read, along with any comments on a record sheet attached to his reader cover. Each morning from 8.30 each student reads to one of the staff members or to a volunteer parent. This system has worked extremely well over the past three years and has not only improved literacy skills of students but the level of enjoyment in reading.

Nungurner currently exceeds all State averages and “like” school averages across the state.

Curriculum

The curriculum at Nungurner School is overseen by the School Council.  It is based on the VELS issued by the Directorate of School Education (DSE). It is divided into eight Key Learning Areas:

            English

Mathematics
 Science
 Health & Physical Education
Studies of Society & the Environment
Languages Other Than English  (LOTE)  -  German
 Technology
The Arts  (music, drama, dance, art/craft)

Class teachers cover all of these areas with assistance from specialist teachers when available.
We make extensive use of our computer resources across all curriculum areas in all grade levels. We have a current ratio of 1:1 computers to students. We have access to the Internet and students have been involved in several exciting projects with schools from around the world. We hope in 2007 to extend our LOTE (German) program to communicate with a small German school on a regular basis.  We would also like to promote an internet liaison between our school and a similar sized Canadian school.  We also intend to strengthen our contacts with similar rural schools in Gippsland in particular Noorinbee.
